How To Brew: AeroPress
(Inverted Method)

The Inverted Aeropress method is a popular way to brew rich, full-bodied coffee with more control over steeping time. This technique minimizes drips before pressing, allowing for complete immersion brewing. Here's how to master it.

What You’ll Need:
  • Aeropress (with plunger and filter cap)
  • Aeropress Paper Filter (or metal filter)
  • Freshly Roasted Coffee Beans (whole or ground)
  • Grinder (if using whole beans)
  • Scale
  • Timer
  • Gooseneck Kettle (optional)
  • Stirrer or Spoon
  • Hot Water (94° or just off the boil)

Brew Ratio:

  • Coffee-to-water ratio: 1:14 to 1:17.
  • For this brew, use 15-18g of coffee for 200g of water. Adjust based on taste preference.

 1. Set Up the AeroPress Inverted

Turn the AeroPress upside down so the plunger is at the bottom and insert it slightly into the brewing chamber (about 1cm). This is the "inverted" position. The filter cap should not be attached yet.

2. Grind the Coffee

Grind your coffee beans to a medium-fine grind, similar to table salt. We recommend starting with 15-18g of coffee for 200g of water.

3. Boil Water

Bring your water to a boil, then let it cool slightly to around 94°c (just off the boil). You’ll need about 200g of water for this brew.

4. Add Coffee to the AeroPress

Place your AeroPress and plunger (inverted) on a scale. Add the ground coffee into the chamber and give the AeroPress a little shake to level the coffee bed. Tare the scale to zero.

5. Bloom the Coffee (30 seconds)

Start your timer. Pour 40-50g of hot water over the grounds, enough to saturate them completely. Stir the grounds gently to ensure all the coffee is evenly wet. Let the coffee bloom for 30 seconds to release trapped gases.

6. Add More Water and Stir

After the bloom, pour the remaining water to reach 200g in total. Stir the coffee mixture for about 10 seconds to ensure even extraction.

7. Steep for 1:30 - 2:00 Minutes

Place the filter cap (with a pre-wet paper filter) on top of the AeroPress. Let the coffee steep for 1:30 to 2 minutes in the inverted position. This longer steeping time extracts more flavour and oils.

8. Prepare to Flip

Carefully place your mug or carafe on top of the AeroPress (still inverted), making sure to hold both securely. In one smooth motion, flip the AeroPress so that it is now in its normal position, with the filter on the bottom and the plunger on top.

9. Press

Slowly press down the plunger with steady pressure. It should take about 20-30 seconds to fully press the coffee through. Stop pressing once you hear a hissing sound.

10. Serve and Enjoy

Remove the AeroPress, discard the filter and used grounds, and give your coffee a quick swirl to mix the layers. Enjoy your rich, flavourful cup!

Tips for Inverted AeroPress Brewing:

  • Grind size: For a stronger brew, use a finer grind. For a lighter brew, use a coarser grind.
  • Plunging speed: Press slowly for a smoother, less bitter brew. A faster press may increase bitterness.
  • Experiment: Feel free to tweak the water-to-coffee ratio, steeping time, and grind size to find your perfect brew.
